Facing a border conflict with Vietnam, a Cambodian military delegation
consisting of 23 high-ranking military and security officials led by the
nation's defense minister, Tea Banh began a five-day visit to Beijing on July 8,
reported Prashanth Parameswaran, associate editor of the Diplomat, a Tokyo-based
online current affairs magazine.
While China said very little about the event and Defense Minister Banh
describe it as an "annual exchange visit," Parameswaran said that the 23 members
of the delegation includes the commanders of all three branches of the Royal
Cambodian Armed Forces as well as the national military police. He said that
such large and high-powered delegation makes the visit look "big" despite Banh's
denial. Also, Paramenswaran noticed that the visit came just days after violent
border clashes between Cambodia and Vietnam.
Hundreds of troops from both nations were involved in the territorial
conflict which took place in late June. Noone was killed in the confrontation,
however, and few were injured. Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen was accused by
the Cambodian opposition of using maps drawn by Vietnam to assess the country's
borders with its easternn neighbor. Hun later wrote a letter to UN Secretary
General Ban Ki-moon on July 6 requesting a map prepared by former colonial ruler
France so it could use their demarcation.
A meeting was held by Vietnamese and Cambodian officials in Phnom Penh this
week to discuss the border issue. Yet as Cambodia is unable to reach a final
solution with Vietnam, it has turned its attention to China for military
support. Cambodia was once invaded and occupied by Vietnam between 1979 and
1991. During the occupation, China remained one of Cambodia's most important
allies against Hanoi. Beijing is still Cambodia's primary arms supplier
today.
China also currently has a territorial conflict with Vietnam over islands in
the disputed South China Sea. Parameswaran said Hanoi has moved relatively
closer to Washington in recent years due to its unsolved issues with Beijing.
Following the meeting between Banh and his Chinese counterpart, Chang Wanquan as
well as Xu Qiliang, the deputy chairman of the Central Military Commission, both
sided vowed to continue supporting each other on major issues regarding core
interests, the article said.
Parameswaran added that China has excessively and contentiously used the term
"core interests" to describe its position regarding the territorial dispute over
the South China Sea. Cambodia largely supports China's claims over the Spratly
islands. In return, Banh seems to request his Chinese counterpart to support his
country's "core interests" when it comes up to Cambodia's border conflict with
Vietnam.

What is that news that Staff reporter wrote in this article that hundreds of troops of both nations clashed but no one died. There was no clash of both nations' troops ( meant army) , the clash occurred involved civilians of both nations.

According to the latest survey from the satellite, the Angkor ancient capital had a vast irrigation network and farm land enough to support a population of 1 million people. That would make sense since the labor required to build, carve such huge stone work in Angkor Wat.
At the time, Vietnam was a small North Vietnam's delta with no more than 100,000 people. In fact, after a couple hundred years later, Vietnam only had a population of 300,000 to 400,000 people. ICJ is not all the answer to Cambodia border problems with Vietnam & Thailand.
First, you must be able to fight and hold your ground like what Cambodian military did it against Siam. The Preah Vihear disputes was a stalemate so the next thing inform 39 members state UN security council. Second, file case at ICJ with your evidences.
ICJ are not magics. Look at Siam lost case November 2011 at ICJ and their troops are still there because we dare not attack them. We don't have the backing or weapons to match. We Khmer must fight our own war when it come down to it. That was why such a large high commands visit the world 2nd superpowers China. When you begin negotiate with someone you must have some card on the table. Vietnam are greater strengths than Cambodia but I bet they bleed too. Most of their provinces border us are much more developed than us so what do think a large barrages of BM-21 MLRS & 155MM,130MM howitzers will do to their infrastructures. Our villages, cities near their border are not yet developed so we don't have much to loose. A limited border war Cambodia can handle those Viets but a full invasion we can't handle. So, getting China to back us up against a full invasion is what Cambodia ask from People liberation army China.

the former vietnamese leaders vowed to do so in the past: in 1958 pham van dong, former vietnamese prime minister, vowed to recognize,in exchange for help from China in the vietnamese war against Unites States, Paracel and Spratly islands as under China´s sovereignty. And now, as they(vietnamese) do not need China´s help any more, they claim these islands as theirs. In the 1960s and 1970s Cambodia helped vietnam so much: Cambodia authorized vietcong troops to live inside Cambodia in order to fight American troops in south vietnam; because vietcongs did not have any base in south vietnam. The presence of vietnamese inside Cambodia triggered American bombing killing many Cambodian people. Cambodia also transported Chinese aids from Sihaknoukville to vietcongs living in Cambodia near its eastern border:arms,ammunitions, food, medecines. The Chinese aid arrivent to vietnam via ho chi minh trail crossing Laos and Cambodia. In exchange for this Cambodia aid, vietnamese leaders(pham van dong) vowed to recognize the Cambodia territorial integrity according to the Cambodia map preseved at UN by Prince Sihanouk, head of State at that time. But now, as vietnam do not need this Cambodia help any more, it is encroaching upon Cambodia territorial integrity along its eastern border.
Vietnam has forced Laos leaders to suppress the border between Laos and vietnam in order to let vietnamese people emigrate and colonize Laos.
Now, vietnamese leaders are claiming Paracel and spratly China islands. In an attempt to do so, they are turning to be friend with United States for help because China is much larger and stronger than vietnam. This is a mirage. American people do not forget that vietnamese killed 58000 American soldiers during the vietnam war. At the best, USA can sell the weapons to vietnam. But do not hope USA will send American troops to die for the ungrateful vietnam.

In 1971, a couple dozen Vietnamese troops attacked and destroyed the entire Khmer Air force in Phnom Penh. There were several hundred Khmer defenders in the air base but they either dared not fight or got wiped out easily at the slightest opposition.
