Celebration: National Day of Cambodia

(The Manila Bulletin) - The Kingdom of Cambodia celebrates its National Day today commemorating the declaration of independence from France by King Norodom Sihanouk in 1953.
Agriculture, textiles and tourism form the backbone of Cambodia’s economy. Major exports of the country are fish, timber, garments, rubber, and rice. The first decade of the 21st century witnessed an impressive growth in Cambodia’s annual average Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which was around 7.7%. This made the country one of the world’s best economic performers, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Cambodia were formally established in 1957. Though our relations were affected by the Khmer Rouge regime in 1975, the Philippines and Cambodia have maintained cordial ties since the resumption of diplomatic relations in 1995 and the reopening of the Cambodian Embassy in Manila in 1999. The two countries have concluded agreements on economic and trade relations investments, air services, agricultural and agribusiness collaboration, tourism and sports cooperation.

Last July 21, 2013, the Philippine Embassy in Phnom Penh and the Samahan ng Mga Pilipino sa Cambodia (SAMAPI), the Filipino community organization in Cambodia, held the first-ever Inter-Agency Service Mission to Cambodia. The event was attended by around 400 Filipinos which brought together various Philippine government agencies as partners in disseminating information and in delivering services to Filipino nationals in Cambodia. These services include Overseas Employment Contract (OEC) processing, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG FUND, and SSS enrollment, and consular services.
We congratulate the people and government of Cambodia headed by His Majesty, King Norodom Sihamoni and Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen, on the occasion of its National Day.
