Cambodia should not accept refugees from Australia: Sam Rainsy

The Cambodia Herald, 29-Sep-14 11:21AM

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- Opposition party leader Sam Rainsy said that Cambodia should not have signed a deal with Australia to accept refugees to live in Cambodia.

Cambodia should not have accepted the refugees from Australia because they are not goods for being exported or imported by any country, Sam Rainsy, president of Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), said in an interview with Australian ABC TV.

"I thought that it was not right when Cambodia accepted the deal because they are not goods. They are human being," he said.

Regarding the controversial refugee deal with Australia, the Ministry of Interior held a news conference on Monday to explain the deal.

At the news conference, Foreign Affairs secretary of state Long Visalo said that the refugees will settle temporarily in Phnom Penh when they are transferred from Australia.

Prime Minister Hun Sen on the same day defended the settlement of refugees in Cambodia, saying that the deal based on voluntary principle.
