Cambodia imports construction materials worth 229 mln USD in first 6 months

Give our kids a better deal
PHNOM PENH (Xinhua) -- Cambodia had spent about 229 million U.S. dollars buying construction materials from foreign countries in the first six months of 2014, up 3 percent from 223 million U.S. dollars over the same period last year, a report of the Ministry of Commerce said Tuesday.

During the January-June period this year, Cambodia had imported 1.22 million tons of construction materials, up 184 percent from 430,000 tons over the same period last year, the report said.

The country got more quantity of materials because the prices of materials this year were cheaper than those of last year.

Ken Ratha, spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, said the rise in construction material imports was a "positive sign" for the country's construction sector.

"The increase is thanks to the country's political stability, sound macroeconomics, and favorable environment for construction businesses," he said.

The materials are mostly purchased from Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, China, South Korea and Japan.

Cambodia's construction has seen a rapid growth in recent years after it was hit hard by the global financial crisis in 2008.

The country had attracted investment of 1.54 billion U.S. dollars in construction projects in the first six months of this year, a 210 percent rise compared to the same period last year.

This week, Vietnam starts the construction of a huge oil refinery worth 3.2 billion US dollars. 1,300 high paying jobs will be generated directly by the new plant. But there will be tens of thousand of jobs generated by the support industry around this huge plant. Taiwan has applied to build a huge 1 billion electronics plant in Vietnam, some where in Ho Chi Minh city.

Vietnam will have so many good and high paying jobs. So far, I don't see Cambodia getting any good factories or jobs. All I see are the foreigners buildings properties, buildings to own the Cambodians.

Cambodians, prepare to get owned.

Drgunzet - I doubt that you are a Chinese spy claiming to be Vietnamese. Am I right?

Some piece of Vietnamese news are wrong: Taiwan don't invest 1 billion electronics plant in Hồ Chí Minh City, it's from South Korea- based Samsung Electronics for a TV and consumer electronics factory.

More imported building material mean Cambodia get a better infrastructure in tourism industry, our key economic pillar. Good news for our nation.
