Thai yellow shirt activist returns home after royal pardon

Give our kids a better deal
Thai yellow shirt activist Veera Somkwamkid flew to Bangkok on Wednesday morning after getting royal pardon from Cambodia's King.

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- Thai yellow shirt activist Veera Somkwamkid flew to Bangkok on Wednesday morning after getting royal pardon from Cambodia's King.

Somkwamkid, a leader of the Thai Patriot Network, left Phnom Penh with visiting acting Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow who just concluded a two-day visit to Cambodia, and was escorted by his family.

Prime Minister Hun Sen asked King Norodom Sihamoni yesterday to grant a royal pardon to Veera Somkwamkid in exchange for Thailand to release 14 Cambodian detainees arrested by Thai authorities on charge of using fake passports.

Somkwamkid was arrested by Cambodian authorities in December 2010 along with six other Thais including his secretary Ratree Pipatanapaiboon after they illegally entered Cambodian territory in Banteay Meanchey province.

Five Thais were later freed just one month after their arrests.

He and Ratree Pipatanapaiboon were sentenced to eight years  and six years in prison respectively on charge of spying, but Pipatanapaiboon was released last year on the occasion of the cremation of late King Father Norodom Sihanouk.
