Hun Sen may be trying to reform party: Sam Rainsy

Give our kids a better deal
PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- Opposition leader Sam Rainsy has reportedly told the Financial Times newspaper that Prime Minister Hun Sen may be seeking to reform the ruling Cambodian People's Party.

Asked about Tuesday's deal ending a year-long opposition boycott of the National Assembly, Sam Rainsy was quoted as saying: "Hun Sen remains Hun Sen. One of his features is being realistic.

"He realises that the Cambodia National Rescue party is a strong and united party. That is unprecedented in Cambodia."

Asked whether why Hun Sen would agree to and honour a deal that ensures a free electoral process in which he might lose, Sam Rainsy reportedly said: "I think he may be trying to do alternative things.

'PROBLEMS WITH THE WAY HIS PARTY IS ORGANISED'

"One is to try to reform his party, reform the way he leads the country. He must have realised by now there are problems with the way his party is organised.

"He maybe thinks he can redress the party problems and that maybe his party could obtain better results in a free and fair election.

"Second, he might be trying to buy time. Buy time to reform, buy time to divide the opposition, to find ways and means to weaken the opposition. He is a good tactician," Sam Rainsy reportedly said.
