CCHR SERIES ON FAIR TRIAL RIGHTS AND RULE OF LAW - HUMAN TRAFFICKING TRIALS IN CAMBODIA IN 2011

Dear all,

Today the Cambodian Center for Human Rights' (CCHR) Trial Monitoring Project releases the 1st edition in 2012 of its Series on Fair Trial Rights and Rule of Law. This month's edition is entitled: Series on Fair Trial Rights and Rule of Law - Human Trafficking Trials in Cambodia in 2011.

Cambodian men, women and children are trafficked for sexual and labor exploitation throughout South East Asia. In July 2010, CCHR published a report providing data on human trafficking trials in Cambodia to assist relevant Cambodian institutions and agencies, including the judiciary and law enforcement agencies, in their handling of cases related to the Law on Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation. This edition of the Series on Fair Trial Rights and Rule of Law examines criminal trials involving human trafficking and sexual exploitation as monitored by CCHR at the Phnom Penh Capital Court of First Instance in 2011.

In total, CCHR monitored 7 trials involving offenses of human trafficking and/or sexual exploitation. The 7 cases monitored involved a total of 13 victims, all of whom were female and 5 of which were juveniles. Of the trials monitored, there was only one where the victim was present at the hearing. Despite the absence of the victims and their legal representatives in 6 of the 7 trials monitored, convictions were achieved in 6 of the 7 trials.

Kind regards,
CCHR
