Big American business group visits Cambodia to assess investment potential

Published: 13-Jan-12

PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - Almost 100 businessmen from the United States are visiting Cambodia to explore for investment opportunities as part of a group led by Kenneth Quinn (pictured), the former American ambassador who now heads the World Food Prize Foundation.

Senior Minister Om Yentieng said Thursday that the 96-member group came from different sectors including education, banking and finance, information technology, pharmaceuticals, health products, manufacturing, tourism, energy, food, real estate and transportation.

“They have come to study and explore for investment opportunities in Cambodia,” he said.

After meeting with the group, Economy and Finance Minister Keat Chhon was quoted as saying that that Cambodia was particularly promoting agriculture, agro-industry, tourism, mining, oil and gas, energy, transportation and telecommunications.

He said some of the businessmen asked about local lifestyles and the proposed mainstream hydropower projects on the Mekong River given Cambodia's high rate of fish consumption.

Om Yentieng said Keat Chhon told the Americans that Laos had been asked to delay such projects for 10 years to allow time for further studies. Keat Chhon also told his guests about Cambodian’s plan to boost rice exports to as much as two million tons a year, he said.

Here come American imperialism. Watch out Khmers. You'll will be their slave for generations, just like the garment industry. The Chinese factory owners get rich while poor Khmer girls work to death.

Finally the USA, the world champion of science/technology and the greatest nation still on earth is expressing interest in investing in Cambodia. The later country had suffered tremendously since the late 12th century and had lost virtually all land before the French came for the rescue. But Khmers always hope to rebuild the country under the hospice of divine savior in literally sense.

May the year of 2012 is the real starting point of Modern Cambodia.

I remember Hun Sen said he himself and Cambodia would never need any master of a caliber of Vietnam. If we need one,he continued,we would prefers French or ultimately the USA.

As a Cambodian-American myself, I would say the US has no bad intention toward Cambodia or wanted to become Khmer Master.
The love-hate affair should stop and the love-respect should begin.

It is not their fault, they only want to help us and we Khmer have to do the best thing and make their own decision.
How about the people, who only complained about this and that, why are you so passive and not doing any thing to help the struggling Khmer people.
